Technical editing may include the correction of grammatical mistakes, misspellings, mistyping, incorrect punctuation, inconsistencies in usage, poorly structured sentences, and wrong scientific terms.
Large companies may employ experienced writers to the technical articles. Smaller companies and students that cannot afford dedicated editors will use experienced writers in the subject to proofread and edit their articles.
The technical editor should be familiar with the subject being written. The “technical” knowledge that an editor gains over time while working on a particular product or technology does give the editor an edge over others who are competing for the work. But the most important skills are in regards to attention to detail, the ability to remain focused while working on lengthy pieces of text or complex topics, their interaction with the writer, and excellent communication skills.
